Detroit weekend: color, books, and a rare open house at a private club

DETROIT. Concert of Colors opens its grand ceremony Saturday at 11 a.m. on the DIA's south lawn, led by a procession from the Gabriel Brass Band and a tribute to the festival's late co-founder, Ismael Ahmed. The free, all-ages festival closes Sunday night with a set from Sheila E.

The ninth annual Detroit Festival of Books takes over Eastern Market on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., free, with more than 300 vendors selling books, vinyl, comics, and art alongside a kids zone. And the Carbon Athletic Club, a 79-year-old members-only institution in Delray, opens its gates to the public Saturday from 2 p.m. to midnight for a Zug Isle Tiki party, cash only, with a lineup that includes Don Duprie, Alison Lewis, and the Craig Brown Band.
