Detroit: five ways to keep the kids outside this summer
DETROIT. Ralph Wilson Park runs free family movie nights Wednesdays at 7 p.m. through August 12, showing everything from Jaws and Jurassic Park to Dreamgirls, at 1801 Jefferson Ave W. Gabriel Richard Park hosts Reading & Rhythm on the Riverfront, a free literacy program for kids, Thursdays and Fridays through August 14 at 7130 E. Jefferson.
For cooling off, the city runs splash pads at Mt. Elliott, Riverside Park, Palmer Park, and Belle Isle, plus the Wayne County Aquatic Center at 12600 Chandler Park Drive. Spotlight Park at 5945 Linwood hosts the Detroit Symphony's Music in the Park for ages 0 to 10, Fridays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. through July 24, also free. Registration for the Detroit Yacht Club's Youth Regatta, set for August 4 and 5, has already closed.
