5 Cool Things to Do This Summer in Detroit With Kids Outdoors

Detroitisit has compiled five outdoor summer activities for kids across Metro Detroit. Movie Nights at Ralph Wilson Park runs Wednesday evenings through mid-August, screening family films like Jaws and Jurassic Park in the riverside park. Reading & Rhythm on the Riverfront (R3), the Conservancy's 16th-season literacy program, offers free Thursday and Friday morning sessions at Gabriel Richard Park with interactive reading activities and riverfront views—pre-registration recommended. The guide also highlights Detroit splash pads and water parks as affordable summer cooling-off spots, plus free Music in the Park every Friday, a partnership between NW Goldberg and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for kids ages 0–10 featuring live music and interactive arts. A Youth Regatta at the Detroit Yacht Club (August 4–5) rounds out the list as an example of youth sailing programs on the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair, though registration for this year has closed.
