Detroit to repair 9,000 faulty alley sewer lines for free by 2030

Detroit announced a $184 million program to repair 9,000 faulty residential sewer connections at no cost to homeowners, funded by federal grants from flooding recovery assistance. The work addresses a widespread problem: about one in three private sewer lines in the city are clogged, offset, or failing due to aging infrastructure (60–90 years old), leading to basement backups and alley collapses. Homeowners would otherwise pay $10,000 or more per repair on their own.

The city will prioritize low-to-moderate income neighborhoods and roll out repairs in phases starting October 2026, with completion targeted for 2030. Residents don't need to sign up; the water department will select locations and notify homeowners via door hangers. Work may cause brief disruptions (a day or two) but won't affect drinking water or require permanent service interruptions.
