Eastern Market: the new shed cuts loading to 20 minutes
DETROIT. Eastern Market has opened Shed 7, a 43,000-square-foot wholesale building that cost $16.6 million. Dock-level loading and refrigerated storage mean a farmer's stop that used to take two hours now takes about 20 minutes.
The market has run its wholesale district since 1890, and roughly 200 million pounds of Michigan specialty crops move through it every year, mostly between midnight and 6 a.m. Shed 7 sets aside cold storage for regional farmers, Detroit growers, and growers of color, so they can hold product and meet more buyers instead of driving straight home.
Katy Trudeau, Eastern Market's president and CEO, and Brandon Seng, the market partnership's director of programs, worked with the Gilbert Family Foundation, whose Linda Nosegbe helped back the project. Eastern Market says it plans to put the facility toward its mobile market program next.
