Kraftologie: a West Village craft lab, opening in 2027

DETROIT. Trice Clark has taught craft workshops around Metro Detroit for 12 years. Now she's building a permanent home for them: Kraftologie, a craft lab planned for the West Village's District 5, set to open in May 2027, thirteen years after her first workshop in May 2014.

A $100,000 Hatch Detroit grant covers the seed money, and a $25,000 Knight Foundation grant will fund an app for online learning. The lab will offer drop-in classes in jewelry, woodworking, watercolor, charcoal and sewing, plus memberships and co-working space, open to all ages. Clark hasn't taken an art class since 2001, when Detroit Public Schools cut the program; her 14-year-old son now works alongside her as a workshop assistant and photographer.

Hatch Detroit has backed 60 businesses in fourteen years. Kraftologie is next in line.
