Kraftologie and Creativity in Detroit, with Trice Clark

Trice Clark, who's been teaching craft workshops across Metro Detroit for 12 years, won a $100,000 Hatch Detroit grant to open Kraftology, a creative learning lab in the West Village. The space will offer drop-in craft experiences (watercolor, charcoal, jewelry, woodworking, sewing), memberships, co-working, and retail craft supplies—filling a gap left by the closure of Joann Fabrics. Clark has also secured a $25,000 grant from the Knight Foundation and plans to pursue additional funding to keep staff in place.

Kraftology is designed for casual hobbyists and experienced makers alike, with family-friendly daytime hours and adult-only evenings. The concept reflects Clark's own multidisciplinary background, shaped by her inventive family and the loss of art education in Detroit Public Schools. By combining instruction, materials, workspace, and mentorship from artists who understand the craft, she aims to make it easier for Detroiters to turn creative ideas into finished work.
