Downtown Detroit Has Turned Into A True Weekend Destination

According to a new 2026 City Pulse study by the global design firm Gensler, downtown Detroit ranks first nationally for "stickiness"—a measure of how often people visit and how long they stay. Nearly a third of Detroit residents say they go downtown for enjoyment rather than work, double the national average of 16%. The shift reflects a major change since the pandemic: as remote work became common, downtown has transformed from an office-centric weekday hub into an 18-hour destination thriving on evenings and weekends.

The study, which surveyed over 140,000 people across 75 cities worldwide, found that Detroiters love downtown's food and beverage scene, entertainment, recreation, and cultural offerings. The main gap residents identified is a desire for more job opportunities downtown—but the data shows the neighborhood is already vibrant and drawing people back by choice, not obligation.
