Detroit Opera: Tosca opens the 2026-27 season Nov. 1

DETROIT. Detroit Opera opens its 2026-27 season with Puccini's Tosca on Nov. 1, 5 and 7, directed by Louisa Proske and set in an unnamed totalitarian state. South African soprano Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha sings the title role in her world debut, alongside tenor Nathan Granner and bass baritone Alfred Walker. Music Director Roberto Kalb calls it one of the great works of Western music.

The season continues with Fiddler on the Roof, March 14, 18 and 20, 2027, with British baritone Roland Wood as Tevye, staged with fuller orchestration than a typical Broadway run. It closes with a single performance of Philip Glass's Satyagraha on April 17, 2027, a meditative opera about Mahatma Gandhi staged for the composer's 90th birthday with mostly local singers.
