Jacqueline Woodson: at the DIA for educators and students, Nov. 18 to 20

DETROIT. Literacy for Kids brings author and MacArthur Fellow Jacqueline Woodson to the Detroit Institute of Arts Nov. 18 through 20. The centerpiece is a free session for teachers, librarians and school staff on Thursday, Nov. 19, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., where Woodson and Detroit educator Torie J. Anderson-Lloyd will talk about building children's reading confidence through stories and art. Registration closes Monday, Nov. 9, though organizers say walk ins are welcome.
Woodson, who won the National Book Award for her memoir in verse Brown Girl Dreaming, also visits 13 schools across Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties on Nov. 18 and 20 to meet students who got free copies of her book in September. The Skillman Foundation funds the program.
