Pontiac brownfield: EGLE grant pays for a homeless shelter

PONTIAC. Michigan's Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy is awarding Pontiac a $460,000 grant to clean up a contaminated site on the city's north side. The project will become a Hope Shelters facility, a 12,350 square foot emergency shelter and warming center that also helps unhoused adults get identification and other documents.
The site held railroad infrastructure, a dry cleaner and an auto parts warehouse over more than a century; 2024 and 2025 assessments found chlorinated solvents and metals in the soil. Cleanup includes soil remediation, asbestos abatement and a vapor mitigation system.
The $7 million project is expected to create about 32 jobs and open by May 2028, funded through Oakland County using U.S. Housing and Urban Development American Rescue Plan dollars.
