Food insecurity: how Fair Food Network and Groundwork Center are closing the gap

DETROIT. Fair Food Network's Double Up Food Bucks, launched in Detroit in 2009, now runs at about 250 locations statewide, matching SNAP purchases dollar for dollar on fruits and vegetables. The program recently added frozen produce and raised its daily matching limit to $50.
In northern Michigan, Groundwork Center for Resilient Communities connects local farmers directly to food pantries and emergency providers, offering grants and technical support, including refrigeration purchases for shelters. Through federal funding, Groundwork coordinated more than $258,000 in purchases from local farmers, delivering over 100,000 pounds of fresh produce to pantries and meal sites.
Both groups treat food insecurity as a budget problem as much as a supply one, stretching existing assistance dollars and connecting growers directly with the people who need the food.
