The Dojo: Ypsilanti's hip-hop open mic turns 10

YPSILANTI. The Dojo, a monthly hip-hop open mic founded by Harlin Duke Newcomb in 2015, is marking 10 years as a gathering spot for emcees. It started with five people at the Elks Lodge and now runs out of the Regal Beagle on Michigan Avenue, open to artists at any experience level.
On Nov. 6, local artist Diont'e Visible brings his album release for Meteors Are Stars Too, Vol. 1 to the Regal Beagle, a milestone for an artist who built his craft at The Dojo. Newcomb still coordinates performers, sound and payments himself, with a standing line: he doesn't care if someone has been doing this for 20 years or 20 minutes.
