Houdini at 100: Detroit Historical Society marks his death with lectures, a party

DETROIT. The Detroit Historical Society is marking 100 years since Harry Houdini died on Oct. 31, 1926, with two events at the Detroit Historical Museum. On Friday, Oct. 29, curator Jeremy Dimick lectures on Houdini's 19 Detroit performances, 2 p.m., free for members, $15 for adults. On Saturday, Oct. 31, the museum hosts Houdini 100: Magic and Mystery, with carnival games, talks on his life, live sword swallowing, escape artist performances, food from Common Pub, and rare artifacts from the collection.
The events are part of the society's Spooky Week, which also includes a family scavenger hunt, crafts and a dance party on the Streets of Old Detroit on Sunday.
Houdini died at Grace Hospital, now DMC, after his final show at Detroit's Garrick Theatre on Oct. 24, 1926, following a backstage punch that led to sepsis.
