Zoo adoptions: a Rochester Hills family picks an animal for every grandbaby

ROYAL OAK. The Detroit Zoo's ADOPTS program lets anyone symbolically adopt one of the zoo's more than 2,000 animals, across over 200 species, with the money going toward their care and toward conservation work abroad. Four levels run from $50, which gets a certificate, an 8x10 photo, and a species fact sheet, up to $1,000, which adds a custom medallion posted at the animal's habitat for a year.

Rosemary Dirksen of Rochester Hills started adopting an animal for each grandchild's first birthday about a decade ago, beginning with a penguin for her grandson Max. Six grandchildren later, the tradition holds. One picked a warthog, after Pumbaa in "The Lion King."

A medallion on a habitat fence doesn't break like a toy does.
