Waymo: federal regulators say its cars blocked first responders

DETROIT. Federal regulators have told Waymo to stop letting its self-driving cars block first responders. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documented cases of the vehicles entering emergency scenes, obstructing firefighters, and ignoring flashing lights and flares. Regulators plan to meet with autonomous vehicle makers to set new protocols.

Waymo's technology isn't blind to trouble everywhere: one of its cars in California stopped and called police after detecting teenage passengers drinking alcohol and firing water beads.

Elsewhere, the African World Festival runs through Sunday at Hart Plaza, with performances, spoken word, food vendors and retailers celebrating African culture and heritage. Lake St. Clair Metropark is getting a $15 million overhaul, its largest in decades, including a reopened North Marina with 78 transient boat slips; the work wraps by summer 2027.
