Beyond the Walk in Detroit

Riverwalkers, a free program run by the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, has been bringing hundreds of people together for guided walks along Detroit's Riverwalk every Tuesday and Thursday morning during summer since 2008. What started as a simple fitness initiative for older adults has evolved into a major social hub where participants enjoy exercise classes, health screenings, nutrition advice, and most importantly, regular connection with friends and neighbors. The program has grown to over 1,500 registered participants this season alone, with some members—including a 105-year-old who's been involved since the program's start—participating for nearly two decades.

Beyond the walking itself, Riverwalkers has become woven into Detroit's broader riverfront story. As parks like Robert C. Valade and Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Centennial Park opened nearby, the program naturally expanded, and participants now enjoy varying fitness classes (from Zumba to drumming), free wellness services from Wayne State and Henry Ford Health, and AARP resources. For many isolated older adults, these Tuesday and Thursday gatherings are a vital reason to leave home, move their bodies, and belong to something. The program's T-shirt tradition—with longtime walkers collecting and wearing shirts from past seasons—has become a badge of pride and community ownership.
