Little House on the Prairie: Netflix reboot premieres with a new Ingalls family
DETROIT. Netflix's new adaptation of Little House on the Prairie premiered Thursday, July 9. Luke Bracey plays Pa, Charles Ingalls; Alice Halsey plays Laura; Crosby Fitzgerald plays Ma, Caroline Ingalls; and Skywalker Hughes plays Mary. Willa Dunn joins as Nellie Oleson in season two. The original series ran from 1974 to 1983 with Michael Landon as Pa.
Showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine says the new version keeps the story's frontier individualism but adds context the earlier show skipped, including the Ingalls family's limited grasp of the politics behind westward expansion and their friendships with Osage Nation neighbors, which Sonnenshine points to as where the story's real change happens.
The show also gives a more honest picture of parenthood: Laura discovers her father makes mistakes. The writers kept familiar moments from the books, including Ma getting a chair and Pa building a door.
