Detroit bus stops: 200 more shelters and benches by 2027

DETROIT. The Detroit Department of Transportation is adding more than 200 bus shelters and benches citywide through 2027, on top of the 100 plus shelters and roughly 80 benches it has already installed. The new shelters include solar lighting and USB charging ports, funded through a mix of federal, state and city dollars. Each shelter runs about $50,000; each bench, about $15,000.

DDOT says sheltered stops already draw far more riders, 44 boardings a day on average versus seven at stops with no cover. Executive Director Robert Cramer said the goal is to get 75 percent of boardings happening at sheltered stops, calling the program a model to expand to more bus stops down the line.
