Coney dog: Greek immigrants built Detroit's version in 1917

DETROIT. Detroit's coney dog is a steamed bun, a beef and pork dog in natural casing, and an all-meat beanless chili sauce, topped with diced onions and a drizzle of yellow mustard. WDET traced the dish alongside sister stations in Chicago and Milwaukee for its Curious Midwest series.

Gus Kero opened American Coney Island downtown in 1917. His brother, William Kero, opened Lafayette Coney Island next door soon after, and both are still open today. The chili sauce is believed to be a Greek variation, though nobody's pinned down the exact recipe.

Other spots to try: Lafayette Coney Island, L. George's, Zorba's, and Nicky D's.
