Tacos Wuey and Roses: two Detroit rooms on the New York Times list of 50

DETROIT. The New York Times put Tacos Wuey and Roses on its 2026 Restaurant List, 50 places it calls its favorites in America right now. The list isn't ranked or numbered. Sixteen Times reporters and editors traveled the country to scout it, and the paper says its staff paid for their own meals.
Tacos Wuey opened in July 2025 in Mexicantown, in southwest Detroit, with chef Eddie Vargas running it. The Times wrote up his father Jose's birria recipe from Jalisco, the birria egg rolls, quesadillas and ramen it turns up in, the housemade salsa macha, and the lard-fried chicken Milanese with spaghetti verde.
Roses is on East Jefferson on the east side. Molly Mitchell reopened it in September 2025 with a Polish dinner menu: pierogi, kluski, kielbasa, and Polish nachos built from potato chips, smoked whitefish, pickles, trout roe and creme fraiche. The longtime burger stayed, on sourdough. The dining room dates to 1964.
