Bakeries: five metro Detroit shops for scratch-made bread and pastry

DETROIT. Detroitisit's roundup of Metro Detroit bakeries runs from a Filipino spot to French pastry. JP Makes and Bakes, at 6529 Woodward Ave. Suite B in New Center, is run by pastry chef Jonathan and serves Filipino breads, pastries and coffee. Good Cakes and Bakes, at 19363 Livernois Ave., is an organic bakery known for cakes, cupcakes and scones made in-house daily.

Detroit Sugar sells scratch-made cakes out of Western Market in Ferndale. La Gloria Bakery, at 3345 Bagley St. in Southwest Detroit, is a family-owned Mexican bakery with churros, empanadas, chocolate-covered cannoli and hand-made sugar skulls year-round. MK Cannelle, with locations across Southeast Michigan including 45 W. Grand River Ave. in Detroit, makes French-style pastries and cakes and caters events through its MK Lounge.
