U-M denture program: free implants for 100 seniors
ANN ARBOR. The University of Michigan's SenIOR program gives 100 seniors free implant overdentures through 2027, a procedure that normally costs $8,000 to $25,000 and rarely gets insurance coverage. Dr. Hsiao Hsin Sung leads the effort, funded by the Michigan Health Endowment Fund.
Diane R., 59, of Lansing, and Christine Nicholes, 72, of Muskegon, are two of the patients. Loose dentures had cost them the ability to eat and talk with confidence before the implants anchored them in place.
The program is also gathering research to push insurers to cover the procedure as medical necessity, not cosmetic work, and testing 3-D printing to bring it statewide without a trip to Ann Arbor.
