Ann Arbor Symphony: first Ypsilanti concert set for Sept. 18
YPSILANTI. The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra plays its first concert in Ypsilanti Friday, Sept. 18, at 7:30 p.m. at Eastern Michigan University's Pease Auditorium. The program is built around Joe Hisaishi's scores for Studio Ghibli films, including "My Neighbor Totoro" and "Spirited Away." A second Ypsilanti date follows Jan. 23, with Beethoven's Sixth Symphony and Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 5.
Executive Director Sarah Calderini says the move east of US-23 is partly about audience and partly about Ann Arbor running out of venue space. The wider season adds a live-accompanied screening of "Frozen" at Hill Auditorium and "African Queens," the orchestra's first commissioned piece, from a consortium of Black composers called the Blacknificent 7.
