Detroit Evening Report: city adds $2 million for afterschool programs

DETROIT. The city is putting more than $2 million into afterschool programming this year, run by GOAL Line, short for Get On and Learn, at four recreation centers and three library branches. Public, charter and home school students can all take part, with sports, tutoring and transportation included. Director Sheffield's goal is programming within two miles of every school in the city.
Wayne State University researchers Marianna Sadagurski and J. Richard Pilsner have picked up nearly $4 million from the National Institutes of Health to study how Detroit's air pollution affects aging and cognitive health. Early results point to chronic inflammation and impaired cognitive function from the exposure.
