Jazz Room: a Gem Theatre series revives Detroit's own jazz sound

DETROIT. The Jazz Room, a live music series at the Gem Theatre, recreates a 1920s jazz-club set at each show, running through standards like "Freddie Freeloader" and "Cantaloupe Island" alongside tributes to Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong. Shows are booked through early 2027, run 60 minutes, and tickets start at $33; doors open 30 minutes before each set.

Because the band leaves room to improvise, no two nights play out quite the same way. The series traces back to Detroit's early jazz scene in Black Bottom, along Old Hastings Street and St. Antoine.
