Kite Festival: eighth year lands on Belle Isle July 12
DETROIT. The Detroit Kite Festival returns to Belle Isle on Sunday, July 12, its eighth year, set up near the James Scott Memorial Fountain. Admission is free beyond the regular island entry fee. Expect kite-making stations, live music, bubble activities, cooling tents and book nooks.
Lex Draper Garcia Bey, a fourth-generation Detroiter, took over as festival director after the founder stepped back; she also co-directs the Black Bottoms Archive. The Mint Artists Guild marks its own tenth anniversary at the festival with a free face-painting and crafts booth, part of its decade-long work training young Detroiters in the arts.
"Last year, I described it as a block party in the sky," Garcia Bey said.
