Detroit music scene: studios and clubs build a career pipeline
DETROIT. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Detroit has opened an Entertainment Innovation Incubator at Michigan Central, backed by Big Sean, Usher and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith. Every Detroit intern on a recent R&B tour internship, a two and a half month run of 18 stadium shows, got hired to finish out the tour.
In Ferndale, F.B.T. Studios, run by Jake Bass, whose father Jeff and uncle Mark helped launch Eminem's career, remodeled in 2023 and opened its doors to the wider creative community after decades as a private hip-hop hub. Bass started working there at 14.
Michael Seger's Get Fresh Studios has taken a similar path, growing from a budget recording space into a mentorship hub. Seger, a producer, engineer and songwriter of more than 20 years, has trained more than 12 studio apprentices.
