Detroit PWHL team: league awards a franchise for 2026-27

DETROIT. The Professional Women's Hockey League has awarded Detroit a franchise. The team starts play in the 2026-27 season with home games at Little Caesars Arena, its third pro tenant alongside the Red Wings and Pistons.

The league pointed to fan turnout as the deciding factor. Detroit hosted four PWHL games as a neutral site over three seasons, and a March 2026 game drew 15,938 fans, a record for women's hockey at Little Caesars Arena. The city will also host the 2026 PWHL Draft at the Fox Theatre and that year's awards ceremony. Colors will be black and silver, with white and red accents; the team name and logo come later.
