Anne Frank Tree: a sapling from her diary now grows in Detroit
DETROIT. A horse chestnut tree at the Zekelman Holocaust Center was grown from a sapling of the tree Anne Frank could see from her hiding place in Amsterdam. She wrote about the tree in her diary. Center staffer Jamie Miskowski says those passages describe how the sight of it "gave her hope, a sense of connection to the outside world."
The original tree began declining in the early 2000s, and the Zekelman Center was one of about a dozen sites chosen to raise a sapling from it. The tree here also stands for the more than 4,000 Holocaust survivors who resettled in Michigan and built lives after the war. The center plans a multimedia exhibit on the tree for its Anne Frank Gallery in 2027.
