Detroit Hot Sauce Festival: chile eating champs face off at the Masonic Temple

DETROIT. Detroit Hot Sauce Festival debuts Aug. 1 and 2 at the Masonic Temple, with hot sauce vendors from Michigan and beyond, live entertainment, family activities and competitive eating. Saturday's centerpiece is the League of Fire World Title Chile Eating Belt Match, where reigning champion Stephen Curgan defends against Hungarian competitor Jakab Janos, only the second time the world championship has been held in the U.S. Sunday brings the first Detroit Title Belt Match, with the winner moving on to a regional competition in Pennsylvania.

Former Red Wing Darren McCarty and WDET host Ryan Patrick Hooper are both scheduled to appear, and staff from the MSU Product Center, along with local food entrepreneur Carlos Parisi, are running workshops on how to launch a hot sauce brand. Tickets start at $10, with single day, weekend and VIP options; kids under 10 get in free.
