Lions edge rush: a lighter, faster room takes shape

ALLEN PARK. The Lions are rebuilding their edge rusher room for training camp after losing pass rushers from last season, including starter Al-Quadin Muhammad, who signed with Tampa Bay. Aidan Hutchinson, an All-Pro, is locked in on one side. The team added DJ Wonnum in free agency, drafted Michigan's Derrick Moore in the second round, and signed free agent Payton Turner, a former first round pick, to compete for snaps opposite Hutchinson.

The additions mark a shift from the Lions' usual approach. The team has typically preferred heavier edge rushers built for both run stop and pass rush, in the 265 to 280 pound range. This year's group runs lighter but brings more pass rush explosiveness. Wonnum is expected to start early. Moore, who played in a pro-style scheme at Michigan, could see his snaps grow quickly and push for a starting job before the season ends. Turner, who has dealt with injuries, projects as a depth piece and situational pass rusher.
