Detroit hosts the 45th National Veterans Wheelchair Games

Detroit hosted the 45th National Veterans Wheelchair Games at Huntington Place earlier this month, drawing over 500 veterans from across the nation to compete in more than 20 events. The games ran from July 8-14 and marked the first time Detroit has hosted the annual competition, which has grown significantly since its start in 1981 when only 77 veterans participated. The event celebrated Detroit's veteran population of over 22,000 and highlighted the city's commitment to supporting those who served.

Competitors like Army veteran Lisa Maddox and Air Force veteran Eva De Jesus emphasized that the games offer far more than athletic competition—they provide a unique space where veterans can connect with others who share similar military experiences and understand the bonds formed through service. Participants competed in diverse events including wheelchair slalom, basketball, pickleball, table tennis, and field events, with many noting the challenge and personal growth the games inspire.
