Detroit museums: two anniversary block parties this weekend

DETROIT. The Detroit Historical Museum turns 75 on Friday, July 24, and marks it with free admission from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., a classic car show, food trucks, live music, and a birthday cake cutting. Registration is required. A day later, the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle celebrates 65 years with its own free "Dock Party," Saturday, July 25, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with guided tours, remote controlled boats, live music, food trucks, and a community mural painting activity.

Saturday also opens early voting for the primary. Detroit's Department of Elections runs a "Get Out to Vote" block party at its West Grand Boulevard headquarters from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with registration help, information on the city's eight voting sites, live entertainment and giveaways. Nearby, the second annual Detroit Chinatown Block Party starts at noon near Cass and Peterboro. Last year's turned out more than 4,000 people.
