Beating the heat: four Detroit spots to cool off this summer
DETROIT. A summer guide making the rounds points to four ways to beat the heat around town. The Detroit Princess Riverboat, docked at 131 Atwater St. and billed as the largest dinner cruise boat in the Midwest, runs sunset and dinner cruises with live entertainment, plus tours from an hour to a full day. The Belle Isle Nature Center at 176 Lakeside Dr. has a bird observation window, a Deer Encounter exhibit, and nature camps and classes.
The Detroit Institute of Arts, at 5200 Woodward Ave., is running "FORTUNES," an interactive summer installation with digital fortunes and artmaking, free for residents of Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties. The Wayne County Family Aquatic Center at 12600 Chandler Park Dr. has a zero depth entry wave pool, a children's splash pad, and two 23-foot water slides, open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
For National Ice Cream Day, Dairy Whip in Redford, at 26215 Plymouth Road, is serving a Mountain Dew flavored soft serve called Mountain Moo through July 26.
