Michigan: 10 spots where the sky is still dark
MICHIGAN. The night sky is getting brighter across the planet, by 7 to 10 percent a year, according to a 2023 study in the journal Science. Michigan still has 10 places where it isn't. Six state parks carry a dark-sky preserve designation: Lake Hudson Recreation Area in Clayton, Negwegon State Park in Harrisville, Port Crescent State Park in Port Austin, Rockport State Recreation Area in Alpena, Thompson's Harbor State Park in Rogers City, and Wilderness State Park in Carp Lake.
Three more carry the International Dark Sky Park label: Headlands in Mackinaw City, Keweenaw Dark Sky Park in Copper Harbor, and Dr. T.K. Lawless Park in Jones. Beaver Island's wildlife research area holds the state's only International Dark Sky Sanctuary designation. The Perseid meteor shower, one of the year's most plentiful, peaks August 12 and 13.
